Emergency Shelter

WomenSafe offers shelter to survivors of domestic violence from Northeast Ohio.

The shelter is a safe and comforting environment where victims can heal, receive counseling, consider alternatives, and develop personalized goals for an abuse-free life.

All basic necessities are provided upon intake. Resident Care Specialists and volunteers provide support to shelter residents 27/7.

By calling this 24-hour support and crisis management hotline, victims of domestic violence receive support, have access to WomenSafe shelter and services, and receive information and referrals to community resources.

The hotline is also recommended for friends and family who need more information about domestic violence, available services and how to help a person in need.

Court Advocacy

Court advocates help survivors of domestic violence through the court process, explaining victim rights entitlements such as protection orders.

Advocates provide crisis intervention and emotional support as victims seek assistance from the judicial system.

Advocates accompany survivors and their children to attorney, court, school, or social service agency appointments in both Lake and Geauga counties.

Counseling

Counseling is available for adults and children whether they have resided in shelter or not.

Counseling consists of a series of structured, face-to-face or tele-counseling sessions that work toward the attainment of goals as identified in the survivor’s ISP (Individual Support Plan).

WomenSafe’s cognitive-based framework helps survivors understand they are not to blame for the abuse, and that it is likely the abuse will continue if they return to the abuser.

Art Therapy

Art Therapy

Clients use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to improve functioning and sense of personal well-being.

Survivors of domestic violence often struggle to discuss their traumatic experiences. Using art media serves as a bridge between the client and therapist, allowing exploration of feelings at a comfortable pace.

Art therapy is proven to be an effective trauma treatment. It encourages natural expression at all ability levels, meaning anyone can benefit.

Play Therapy

A licensed child therapist is available to help children residing in the emergency shelter or the community in dealing with the trauma of living in an abusive environment.

This service is offered in a unique “Play Therapy Room”. This space offers a variety of play items including games, human figurine sets that depict diversity and inclusion, a puppet theater, video games, and more to assist children in working through their fears, worries, and difficulties.

Housing Advocacy

Trained staff work with survivors to develop individual housing goals, provide access to community housing resources, and assist with the housing process.

Aftercare

Follow-up communication and visits are offered to survivors who have left the emergency shelter to provide continued supportive services, such as household necessities, ongoing education, and links with other programs.
